Nov 16, 2014 - OK, One of the reasons why I took so long upgrading to the latest Mac OS was due to the fact that my fave emus didn't work from Lion onwards.

Are you an emulator developer? If you'd like a user flair reflecting that. I've been using VirtualBox to try to install windows 98 on my new macbook pro. I created the virtual hard disk and booted it up but I get nowhere when it comes to mounting the host drive. I have the disk in, choose the disk drive, reset the machine and then it will boot up with the green icon on the disk right before it halts and says ' No bootable medium found! System halted.' I'm using an external mac USB superdrive cd/dvd reader, but that shouldn't affect this.
I think the problem is that it is a burned copy of a windows 98 install disk on a CD-R so I looked into torrenting a windows install and now I'm totally lost. Can this be done without an actual original windows install disk? I also looked into using Crossover and WineBottler and again got lost because they aren't right for this project. TL/DR I just want to run windows 95, 98 or ME on my mac to run 90's DOS games and the like.
I don't have an actual install disk, but burned copies of install disks for 98 and ME. The Guest Additions do not support 98, but you can get higher resolutions working. I probably followed some guide online, I forget how. But mine will go up to 1600x1200x32. Adapter driver is 'VBE Miniport - Standard Graphics Adapter' and the Monitor driver is just the Default Monitor one. I definitely recall following a guide to get this running smoothly. It had me install an app called 'Rain' which adds support for CPU idling to keep VBox from taking over a core when the VM is doing nothing.
Wtf why is quicktime running Oh yeah, I used this to play Myst and Riven. Works great for that, since you don't need hardware acceleration for those games. Windows 9x will not run DOS games as well as you could with other tools.
I recommend getting DOSBox, it is simpler, more lightweight, and much easier to use. Typically you can drag and drop a game EXE on top of the DOSBox app (well, in Windows, I imagine the Mac one works the same way) and it will 'just work'. But you still may decide you need 9x to play games that require Windows but won't run on something newer like XP (which I would recommend if they do). Make sure CD-ROM is selected as a bootable option in the virtual machine settings. It should be by default but double check. It's under System Boot Order CD-ROM (or System Boot Order Optical in the latest beta). It will need a checkmark.
Make sure the menu option for the host drive gets a checkmark after you select it. If not, something went wrong and the VM can't use it. Make sure you can browse the CD from your Mac. If not it may be damaged or simply too old to read any more. You can try to find a tool to make ISO images from CDs, and then use the ISO directly in VirtualBox. I am unfamiliar with what software to do that is available for Macs so I can't help you there. I would recommend against trying ME.
IIRC it had a bad reputation back in the day. 98 SE (Second Edition, not the first one!) was considered the pinnacle of the 9x branch of Windows.
I currently use as a frontend for,. If you use SDLMAME, along with the binary, don't forget to install the SDL Runtime Library in /Library/Frameworks. Then just set the correct paths in MAME Launcher.
The reason I use MAME Launcher (and SDLMAME) is because I can play a ROM (eg. Ddragon.zip) simply by double-clicking on it, after setting it to open with MAME Launcher via Finder's/Path Finder's Get Info. Or even quicker, just by browsing my Games/Arcade folder in LaunchBar and press enter to run a game.
Since SDLMAME is just a binary, MAME Launcher will open but will run the game immediately. If you prefer, you can use MAME Launcher as a frontend and browse/launch your ROMS from there, if you like the extra options such as screenshots, flyers, info, search, etc.
